Under Dr. Fox's direction, "community-based participatory research" isn't simply an add-on to existing evaluation efforts. Karen has ensured that all programs are built upon a foundation established by the communities to be served, with families, area businesses, local government leadership and faith-based stakeholders playing an active role in project planning, implementation, evaluation and sustainability, working with families to improve their access to preventative services and care. There are currently 18 different initiatives under her leadership.
Associate Professor, Department of Preventive Medicine
Executive Director, Center for Health Innovation and Community Outreach; Assistant Professor, Department of Preventive Medicine
Prior to accepting leadership of Delta Health Alliance, Dr. Fox served as Vice Chancellor at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC). In this role, she was responsible for establishing, promoting and maintaining interdisciplinary and inter-organizational collaborations in the areas of family research, clinician education, and patient care. Under her direction, UTHSC established a new telemedicine network that grew to include 112 sites throughout Tennessee, Mississippi and Arkansas, named the third largest network in the US in 2005 by Health and Human Services. The network established Tennessee's first telemedicine services to juvenile correction centers, bringing access to specialty medical services to youth in state custody. As Assistant Dean for the College of Medicine at UTHSC, Dr. Fox provided oversight of the implementation of an Electronic Health Record (EHR) system and served as Executive Director of the UTHSC Outreach Center, a center formed to improve the health of underserved families through innovative approaches to education, research, and service. Areas of focus included development of new student internship and rural residency opportunities, distance education for clinicians and families in rural communities, and numerous emerging technology applications, promoted in coordination with Dr. Andy Spooner, Director of General Pediatrics at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital.
Dr. Fox is a native of Mississippi and life-long resident of the southern states, dedicating her life to community-based research and sustainable improvements to services that eliminate health disparities in impoverished, rural communities.
